Unpainted popcorn comes off easy, but the painted stuff in my house would not budge, and if it did I put worse cuts in the ceiling. One reason to not consider scraping at all is that you said it was painted. Keep a 5 gallon pail with clean water and a sponge handy to keep the tools clean. I did 2 to 3 coats per room and it came out great. Use a 12 or 14 inch taping knife and a metal pan (better than plastic) and try for good coverage but still as thin as possible so you have less sanding and touch ups to do after each coat. Then it goes on a little thinner but still sticks to the ceiling well. When I first opened it up I added a little bit of water and mixed with a mixing paddle to thin it out a bit. The regular stuff will stick and skimcoat better. If you elect to install fresh drywall over a texture, you can expect a rate of $1.50 to $3.50 per sq.ft., for both materials and labor. A skim coat needs to be followed by a coat of paint, which would be added to the final price of the project. ![]() This involves the process of applying a thin layer of plaster directly over the texture, rather than removing it first, and can cut down on the project price by taking away the removal expenses. The cost to skim coat over averages $1 to $1.50 per square foot. However, most cases we discount the work if you have us perform the entire project, helping you save money while getting the finished look you want.
